Patrick and I gave up on going out to celebrate New Years Eve eleven years, 2 months and 22 days ago – aka, the day of Regan’s birth. Thankfully, our neighbors had to give up celebrating around the same time so these days we all stay home and celebrate with the kids. At eleven and ten, my girls are begging to stay up ’till midnight, which means a long night for me, so we started a countdown balloon “garland” a few years ago to keep the kids entertained.
I fill each balloon with an activity written on a piece of paper and every hour (or half hour depending on how many activities you want to do), one of the kids gets to pop a balloon. My favorite activities:
- Have a Dance Party ~ Have the music queued up and ready to play
- Sparkler Time ~ My girls love sparklers, especially the extra long ones
- Make Confetti Cups ~ I purchase plastic wine cups and bags of confetti. Let them fill their cups and then head outside for a confetti fight!
- Rock Candy or Ring Pop Bubbly ~ Regan and Ava love this one. Fill a plastic champagne flute with ginger ale and then pop in a colored ring pop or stick of rock candy. The ginger ale turns colors – so much fun for toasting.
- Have a Sweet Treat ~ I throw the kids on the back porch and let them decorate cookies with pre-made icing and sprinkles.
- Play Charades
- Silly String Fight
- Game of Glow Stick Tag – Kids love playing with glow anything. Will keep them entertained for at least thirty minutes!
